
Samba Mundi is an eclectic collection of personalities that began as a trio - and has now has flourished into one of Sydney's most exciting and groovy outfits. Comprised of musicians from all over the world, each member brings their own influences and style to the original compositions. With a strong Brazilian foundation, Samba Mundi adds jazz, funk, tango, European folk and African layers to create their own unique sound.
Samba Mundi has performed at the Manly Jazz Festival, Hilton Hotel’s Marble Bar, The Annandale Hotel, AB Hotel, Broadway Café, Woollahra Hotel, The Empire Hotel, The Factory Theatre and the Vanguard amongst many others.
TONI ALLAYIALIS is a singer, Dancer, Percussionist, Composer and Playwright. She has sung for Paul Kelly, INXS, Vince Jones, Marcia Hines, Tribes of Jubal and The Australian Art Orchestra and others. She is a founding member of Toni Nation, an original World Music group who represent multicultural Australia, performing Nationwide and in the Philippines, Singapore and Jamaica at Festivals. She makes regular appearances in Sydney with the Latin Jazz ensemble Espirito and Samba Mundi.
MARCELLO MAIO is a young musician and composer with a distinugished career eclipsing those of his older contemporaries in the jazz music scene, working with bands including Monsieur Camembert, Tango Saloon, the Marcello Maio Trio and Samba Mundi. He was also musical director for Australian Idol finalist Ngaiire Joseph, and was the resident Accordionist on SBS Television's "In Siberia Tonight".
JUNICHI SHIOMI has played with renowned American band The Platters, and the film composer Michael Nyman amongst others. Based in Sydney for over a decade, he has established himself among "the musos" as a renowned bass player. He has recorded and performed with Jose Prates, Clabash, Upshot, Latin Fire, Samba Mundi and many others.
RODRIGO GALVAO is a Brazilian drummer with a strong samba foundation. In Brazil he has played with Rosa Passos, Cassia Eller, Brazilian Popular orchestra, MPB Jazz and the Renato Vasconcello Quartet. Moving to Sydney in 2004, he's played alongside Jonathon swartz, Mike Nock, Marsala and Espirito. Rodrigo was invited as a Special Guest on tour with German guitarist Lulo Reinhard and Australian guitarist Doug de Vries. He has also formed a duo with Guy Strazz, which has performed at events including the Aichi Expo 2005 in Japan, and the Adelaide International Guitar Festival in 2007.
Samba Mundi is often augmented with special guests who included MC Buda, Sergio Galvao, Adam Ventura, Ross Ferraro, Merenia Gilles, Daniel Goodacre and Eddie Bronson.
